THE BLO EXPERIENCE
Rory Sandilands heads up Blo.
The salon is testament to his years of experience, talent and passion for the industry. But then talent has always been in his fingers — he started out at the local salon at the age of 14, working on weekends and school holidays.
He completed his apprenticeship with Dave & Johan, and stayed another 10 years with this iconic Johannesburg franchise. During this time, he broadened his horizons and influences by going to London — and boosted his qualifications with Toni & Guy of London, another famous international brand. Back in SA, his hard work and talent was rewarded and he was made Creative Artistic Director of Dave & Johan.
As such, Rory was responsible for all competitions, promotions and artistic decisions. He was behind some hugely successful in-house launches, as well as events for Redken and L’Orèal. At this time, he also worked closely with a burgeoning local film industry.
In 2000, Rory joined L’Orèal Professionnel’s H3 team and he remains an excellent rolemodel and trainer for this much-lauded international styling team. His artistic and creative vision saw him style models for Elle magazine and other local trade publications. Today L’Orèal is proud to have him as one of its creative team members. The brand’s endorsement of Blo underlines its faith in Rory’s talent and professionalism.
Julie’s hairstyling journey began with Marna Bean of Graffiti. After being offered a position, Julie worked at Graffiti for four years, learning basic skills. Marna also sent Julie on a course in beauty therapy, focusing on manicures, pedicures and waxing. However, after performing beautician work for some time, Julie realised that her real passion lay in hairdressing and she has never looked back.
In 2007, Julie was introduced to Blo where she has worked ever since.
Julie is a highly enthusiastic member of the Blo family, working under the mentorship of Rory and Gareth. On Tuesdays, Julie attends college to further her knowledge and understanding of hairdressing and the latest trends. Julie also loves being involved in the shows that Blo participates in and looks forward to a long and rewarding career at this trendy salon.
Jenna is a manager and trainer at Blo salon.
Having come to the decision that hairstyling was her calling in life, Jenna studied at Carlton Hair International where she specialised in colour technique.
Jenna has nine years of working experience in the industry and some of her greatest career highlights have been SA Fashion Week and the Durban Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
Today Jenna specialises in hairstyles for weddings, Brazilian blow outs and upstyles.
Michellene began hairdressing at the age of 14, working fervently every weekend for two years.
She then began working for Trilogy salon in Rosebank Mall. During her eight years at Trilogy, Michellene worked as one of the heads of training and completed her apprenticeship. She also enhanced her qualification with Toni & Guy, specialising in cuts and colours.
Michellene believes that creativity finds expression when it is free to explore so she does not limit herself to any particular discipline. She loves everything that hairstyling has to offer and prefers to keep an open mind so that she can always discover new avenues.
Irrespective of the method, Michellene is committed to making her clients feel and look good.
Carmen began her training as a hairdresser at Carlton Hair International. With six years of experience, her specialities include colour, cutting and styling.
One of her career highlights since she began her journey with Blo is the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, and as part of her contribution to the talented team, Carmen also completes training with the apprentices at Blo Hair.
Joan fulfils the important task of managing the reception desk and all bookings for the salon.
Since retiring after 30 years of working as a PA, Joan has assisted Rory and the other stylists at Blo, adding her own special touch to this upmarket salon. She also sells Tupperware and Avon products and makes homemade cards right here at the salon.
